bmurator Kū again... :) I simply love that voice! It is different in all three languages. The English version reminds me of Bowie, in the best possible way, with almost every song. The French is incredibly sweet & the English accent just adds to that immeasurably... :) The German reminds me of growing up in a Lotte Lenya / Kurt Weill / Bertolt Brecht household as Kū's voice would suit this perfectly... :) Highly recommended!!!

In spring 1978 Kuku Doll set about recording what was to be her first album for Giorgio Moroder's disco label Oasis at his renowned Musicland Studio in Munich. The album was to feature musicians from his Munich Machine band and the sessions had progressed smoothly with most of the backing tracks considered complete and merely awaiting definitive vocal overdubs from Döll herself before the final mixing could commence. All seemed well when the team paused for a break before reassembling to oversee the final aspects of the production. But during this interegnum, Döll had a complete change of heart about the direction of the project and, having heard the Walker Brothers 'Nite Flights' album, she snuck back into Musicland on the pretext of doing some vocal warmup to the completed backing tracks and left with the tapes, then headed for London to work on completing the album herself in the same Euston studio where The Walkers had recorded theirs.

The result of this final London sessions was eventually released in as uncompromisingly uncommercial a fashion as its author intended under the title 'Mannequin'. You'll be able to hear a restored and remastered version of the album later this year. The almost complete German version, tentatively entitled 'Munich Mannequin' before it was prematurely curtailed has never seen the light of day. Until now...

Thanks to a recently discovered C90 cassette tape featuring the then-current 'best' versions of all the tracks intended for 'Munich Mannequin', Dr François Gaul and his team at the IRCAM institute in Paris have been able to reconstruct as close a version to what the finished album would have sounded like as we believe is possible. Using their advanced machine learning software and the cleaned up, de-processed backing tracks Döll took to London, they've been able to sync the isolations they obtained from the C90 with the multitracks to create a new master project into which an AI assisted isolation of Döll's vocals from the cassette tape has been mixed.

The results are, we have to say, quite stunning but this special double A sided single release features the original 'best' Munich versions of the two songs, as recorded in Spring 1978. These releases have been transferred at the highest possible resolution from the original C90. The full 1978 cassette version of the album will be available exclusively to État de Kū subscribers as part of 'KUnst: the Complete Gernan Recordings' which represents this Summer's KuKoo Club Quarterly offering. But this single from the same source gives the perfect demonstration of just what a remarkable and fortunate find the Munich Cassette was. And you'll be able to hear the astonishing job the team have done when these historic and long thought lost recordings are released later this year in all their beautifully restored and reconstructed glory.
